Seagate Momentus XT 01

The second generation Seagate Momentus XT solid state hybrid drive for laptops has been released on a global scale. The 750GB gadget is expected to feature in upcoming consumer and commercial laptops from up to seven manufacturers.

Previously introduced with a memory capacity of 500GB, the new generation Momentus XT brings forth a 750GB variant. The 500GB version offered a spin speed of up to 7200RPM, while featuring an average latency of 4.17ms. On the other hand, the 750GB option delivers an average latency of 4.20ms, the spin speed remaining the same. The random read and write seek time for both drives are estimated to be 11ms and 13ms, respectively.

“Laptop users want faster access to all of their content, from gaming, music and video to spreadsheets and documents, creating strong demand for the highest performance,” believes Scott Horn, vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Seagate. “Seagate is excited to answer this need with a second-generation Momentus XT drive that delivers solid state drive (SSD) speed, greater storage capacity and easy installation at an affordable price.”

The company claims the latest version of the drive to be approximately 70 percent faster than the older one. Also, it is said to deliver twice the interface as well as NAND read-write speeds as compared to the earlier generation gadget. This can be partially attributed to its SATA 6Gb/s interface and 8GB of SLC NAND flash. The new device features the company’s Adaptive Memory and Fast Factor technologies.

The second generation 750GB Seagate Momentus XT price tag reads $245 (approx. Rs. 12,750).
