Toshiba to welcome 2.5″ MBF2xxLRC SAS HDD

MBF2xxLRC SAS HDDToshiba claims to have received a lot of admiration for its 25” MBF2600RC HDD released this February. In response to the demand for small form factor drives, the company has unveiled the MBF2xxLRC which is a 2.5” SAS HDD fitted in a 3.5” bracket.

The HDD is available in three storage capacity options, namely 300GB, 450GB and 600GB. It has been crafted to deliver a spin speed of about 10,025RPM and integrates a 6GB/s 2.0 SAS interface. The device offers a transfer rate of 216MB/s as well as exhibits a read and write speed of about 4ms and 4.4ms, respectively.

“Making it easier to migrate from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch HDDs offers organizations greater opportunities to achieve a more efficient and productive IT environment,” affirmed Joel Hagberg, VP, enterprise marketing, Toshiba Storage Device Division. “Toshiba has applied its hard disk drive engineering expertise to develop the MBF2xxLRC, demonstrating our commitment to provide customers with the opportunity to benefit from small form factor HDDs.”

The buffer memory of the unit amounts to about 16MB and in the idle mode the HDD displays acoustics of 2.9 Bels. The 300GB and the 450GB HDDs consume up to 3.5W of power when in the idle mode and about 8W in the operating mode. The 600GB variant requires 3.2W power in the idle mode and 7W power in the operating mode.

The 2.5” MBF series are cited to consume about 70% lesser energy in the idle mode and about 50% lesser in the operating mode. The 2.5” HDD fixed in a 3.5” bracket weighs about 0.5kg and its dimensions measure about 101.6mm x 146mm x 25.4mm. This offering maybe considered ideal for storing applications with reduced power consumption.

Toshiba’s MBF2xxLRC SAS HDD will be available through distributors form July this year. The company has not revealed the pricing details of the product.
