Toshiba 1.8-inch 80GB and 160GB Hard Drives Introduced

Toshiba has unleashed its two new 1.8-inches hard disk drives, dubbed the MK1626GCB and the MK8022GAA, featuring 160GB and 80GB of storage capacitates, respectively.

Toshiba claims that the MK1626GCB with 160GB of storage offers the industry’s largest storage capacity in such a small form factor, whereas the MK8022GAA is a thin and light form factor.

Both the hard drives can be used for mobile devices including portable media players, notebook PCs and digital movie cameras. They also employ an improved read-write head and enhanced magnetic layer. This helps to boost recording density, further enabling them to achieve an areal density of 353 mega-bit per square millimeters (228 gigabits per square inches).

The 160GB MK1626GCB Hard Disk drive features 80GB platters (0.3 inches thick), 3,600 rpm speed, 52mbps transfer rate and 15ms seek time; and also adopts the CE-ATA HDD interface that optimizes performance in consumer electronic applications.

The environmental friendly hard disk drives improve energy consumption efficiency by 33% and are RoHS-compliant.

Toshiba is expected to present the hard disk drives at DISKON USA 2007 in California, which will be on September 19th and 20th, 2007 in California. Toshiba has started shipping MK8022GAA and samples of the MK1626GCB.
