Third-generation Intel Atom processors headed for Asus, Lenovo, Samsung devices

New Intel Atom Processors

It looks like the third-generation Intel Atom processors codenamed Cedar Trail are ready for prime time. Sure, it sounds confusing when Intel stresses on mini notebooks at a time when everyone’s talking about the death of the netbook. At any rate, the company has started shipping out the mobile CPUs with the promise of up to 10 hours of battery life and weeks of standby time.

This should interest a lot of OEMs since battery life is always a matter of concern, especially when it comes to mobile devices. Intel also claims to have designed the new processors to use as much as 20% lesser power when placed against the previous platform. The included Rapid Start technology facilitates quick resume from standby mode and aids in conserving battery life.

The new processor series spans the dual core Intel Atom N2600 and the N2800, each bundled with the company’s NM10 Express chipset. Their spatial footprints are cut down to ensure manufacturers have the opportunity to build slimmer netbooks. Each CPU incorporates a media engine which accommodates full 1080p HD playback of videos or Blu-ray content.

Blending into the entire scheme of things is the Intel GMA 3600/3650 supported by an integrated memory controller. Based on 32nm process technology, the chips should even be able to lend support to digital display and output options like HDMI and DisplayPort. The choice of compatible operating systems covers Windows, Tizen, MeeGo and more.

Asus, Acer, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba devices will be seen hitting the markets with these third generation Intel Atom processors in early 2012.
