In the month of March, VIA Technologies was spotted releasing its VIA Eden X2 processors that were enhanced for fanless adoption in a wide range of industrial and commercial embedded systems. The company has now announced the launch of its new VIA QuadCore processors which claim to be the lowest power quad core processors in the current market.

Crafted with an advanced, energy-efficient multi-core design, this processor renders incredible multi-threaded performance for seamless multi-tasking, multimedia playback, productivity and internet browsing in low power conditions. Featuring a TDP of only 27.5 watts, the device is touted to be 21 percent more proficient as compared to other processors. It also claims to be a suitable option for an extensive array of desktop PC, notebook, small form factor PC, all-in-one PC and mini-server system design applications.

“As a result of the rapid proliferation of high definition multimedia content and increasingly demanding multithreaded applications, a four core processor is the new baseline for today’s mainstream PC user,” commented Epan Wu, Head of Processor Platforms, VIA Technologies. “The VIA QuadCore processor meets that need with the industry’s most power efficient architecture.”

The QuadCore processor merges four Isaiah cores on two dies, providing improved multi-tasking and multimedia performance. The processors will be initially available at a speed of 1.2+GHz and boast of 64-bit compatibility. It also includes interesting elements comprising adaptive overclocking and 4MB L2 cache, and the 1333MHz V4 Bus. TDP is 27.5 watts.

Besides, VIA VT virtualization, a technology enables legacy software and applications to be utilized in virtual environments without affecting the overall performance. The QuadCore processor sports VIA PadLock with the Advanced Cryptography Engine for superior AES encryption.

This hardware-based security feature renders data encryption while on the go which is an imperative tool in content protection and system security. These processors are devised with the help of the newest 40nm process and are completely pin-to-pin compatible with VIA Eden, VIA C7 and VIA Nano E-Series, and VIA Eden X2 processors.

The VIA Technologies VIA QuadCore processors are expected to start volume shipments in Q3, 2011.
