Another iPhone 3G Killer – the Samsung i900 Omnia Touchscreen Smartphone

Samsung i900 Omni The next-generation iPhone 3G has shaken the entire mobile phone and media industry with its official launch. Here is a little spice to the touchscreen segment – Samsung has also announced its latest touchscreen smartphone called i900 Omnia.

Based on Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, the newest Samsung handset features a 3.2-inch WideQVGA display that allows users to easily navigate through the menus with just a touch. Like the iPhone, it has the ability to automatically adjust from landscape to portrait mode, thanks to an accelerometer sensor. Just hold the phone the way you want and appreciate the auto-rotate of the screen.

Unlike the iPhone, the i900 sports handwriting recognition for jotting down notes, 5 megapixel camera with face, smile detection and auto-panorama shot. It also comes bundled with an integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, pre-installed GPS and freedom to geotag photos. Users can also enjoy multimedia features such as FM radio or MP3 songs as it is compatible with a wide range of audio and video formats.

Measuring 12.5 millimeters in thickness, the Omnia touchscreen device offers ample amount of built-in memory, precisely 8 GB and 16 GB versions. If this is not enough, a microSD slot is there to expand the memory up to 16 GB. Besides, it also comes equipped with e-mail, a Microsoft Office viewer, an Opera browser and contact manager.

For superior connectivity, the i900 Omnia runs on quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and also supports wireless carriers’ 3G networks.

Samsung’s i900 Omnia touchscreen smartphone will initially roll out in Southeast Asia, followed by other markets by Q2 of 2008. Price is kept a secret.
