Truphone demos VoIP, Wi-Fi, Facebook on Apple iPhone

Truphone logo and Apple iPhone Truphone Software has announced that they have showcased a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over a Wi-Fi phone call on the highly anticipated Apple iPhone. The call was initiated by the Chief executive officer James Tagg at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego, CA.

Now, let’s check how the call works!

The VoIP call initiated from a mobile device gets routed through Wi-Fi and the Internet to the company’s servers, which comes back to the access point and then reaches the destination handset.

Moreover, this has the capability to handle session initiation protocols (SIP) that consists of SIP to SIP, SIP to phone and phone to SIP. Sadly, these calls are not free, consumers have to pay for the calls made (even on the Skype-to-Skype connections) that are generally free.

James Tagg, Truphone’s CEO explained, “Truphone is truly the mobile operator for the internet age and our aim is to see Truphone available on all cellular phones with the inherent functionality needed to make VoIP calls. The Apple iPhone is such a phone and we’re pleased to be able to show it working for real. People today use multiple tools to communicate in different ways at different times, but this multiplication of options can serve to confuse consumers. By providing the Facebook community with free calls to real phones, Truphone will genuinely help bridge the worlds of traditional and internet telephony.”

Pros of the software are that the user need not unlock the SIM in order to operate its service for the iPhone. At the show, a Facebook-to-iPhone call using SIP was also demonstrated. It also enables the software to use other Web 2.0 aspects such as social networks. Facebook users need to click on a friend’s Truphone ‘Call Me’ button for free call.

However, VoIP software has been available for the iPhone since its launch thanks to companies like Skype.

The seven-year-old company, Truphone Software has earlier offered its VoIP software for some Nokia Internet-enabled handsets such as the Nokia E61i and the E90.
