Indian Mobile Phone Subscribers Cross 200 Million Mark

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that the India has passed the 200 million mark of mobile customers.

The fastest growing Indian wireless market has experienced a total of 201.29 million at the end of August 2007, including GSM, CDMA & wireless in local loop – fixed (WLL-F).

In August, India added 8.31 million wireless subscribers, while 8.06 million subscribers joined in July. The government has set a target of 200-miilion mobile subscriber for 2007-end. Interestingly, the country has met the target four months before the schedule.

Indian wireless operator, Bharti Airtel, has added 2.05 million users in August with a total subscriber base of 46.8 million, while Vodafone Essar has now acquired 34.11 million users, improving from 1.67 million subscribers in August.

By 2010, a target of half a billion mobile phone subscribers has been set by the Indian Government.
