Motorola and Sony Ericsson join hands to Share UIQ

Motorola Sony Ericsson and UIQ logo Motorola has planned to acquire 50 percent stake on Sony Ericsson-owned UI, which is based on Symbian. UI, the parent company of UIQ is the platform behind Sony Ericsson’s touch screen smartphones. Thus, Motorola should be deciding on the same in coming future.

Sony Ericsson and Motorola will further enhanced the UIQ as a strong, independent cross-vendor user interface for smarthphones and media-centric phones. They also plan to increase their cooperation and support for the UIQ developer program.

Both the mobile phone manufacturers have given a green nod to develop the platform together. They will also continue to license it out on ‘equal terms to all mobile device vendors in the industry.’ Additionally, both the companies are committed to expanding the shareholder base of UI holdings to include handset vendors.

On the UI platform, the smartphone introduced by Sony Ericsson includes the P1 and the new W960 Walkman phone. The Motorola MOTO Z8 phone is also based on Symbian/UIQ platform.

Sony Ericsson bought UIQ Technology from Symbian Ltd in February this year.
