Sony’s Rear-Projection TVs to be Terminated

Sony has announced their plan to discontinue the production of its rear projection TVs due to the price fall of larger flat-screen TVs. The company has decided to stop the production of its rear-projection systems in February 2008 at Sony EMCS Corp. Ichinomiya TEC in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, Mexico and Malaysia.

After shutting down the manufacturing of rear-projection TVs, Sony will shift its attention on LCD and OLED technology based television sets.

The rear-projection TVs are cheaper than LCD or Plasma TVs. However, they are more bulky than flat-screen units. According to reports, Sony experienced the sale of 1.1 million in fiscal 2006, in rear-projection TVs segment. However, now they expect to sell about 400,000 this year, which is an around 43 percent drop.

Apart from Sony, Seiko Epson and Hitachi have already moved out of this segment of the market.
