One of the forthcoming entrants in tech terrain, marked to make a 2012 debut is the freshly introduced LightPad by QP Optoelectronics. This mobile accessory transforms smartphones into 11-inch screen devices so that users are able to watch multimedia content and execute tasks in a more convenient and quick manner.

Engadget reports that this upcoming device comes integrated with a pico-projector in the display which apparently helps in saving power as it delivers over 500 nits for less than 2.5 watts. Those who face inconvenience while working on the small smartphone screens could benefit from this tool since it enables them to do the same work on a larger display. When mounted on the LightPad, the handset is capable of functioning as a notebook computer.

James Lupino, QP Optoelectonics’ Vice President of Business Development, explained, “The smartphone is becoming the primary computing device for consumers and professionals. But their small display and keyboard greatly limit their application for serious users, especially for those who are seeking to replace their notebooks. LightPad addresses the main drawbacks of the user-interface of smartphones by utilizing dual mode projection technology. With high quality image display, versatile screen size, and super portability, LightPad enables a super smartphone for all applications. We expect the LightPad will be adopted widely as a must-have for smartphone users.”

Equipped with a super short focal length projection lens, this peripheral can offer a 60-inch display in front projection mode and can be used as a projector for video or TV viewing as well as big screen gaming and meeting presentations. It is a combination of an 11-inch high contrast rear projection screen and a full-size keyboard.

The LightPad is all set to be launched at the CES 2012 exhibition that will be held in Las Vegas from January 10 to 13, 2012.
