The Nintendo 3DS has probably become a must-have gadget amongst the gaming brigade as its sales figures have surpassed the 4 million units mark. This handheld console created headlines back in March last year as it graced the gaming terrain, bringing along with it various new features which would definitely capture the fancy of players who are constantly on the go.

When pitted against the Wii, the 3DS device has apparently sold more units in the premier nine months of its launch. For the fifth consecutive year, Nintendo has sold over 12 million total hardware units in the U.S. for the year 2011. The number of consoles sold includes 4.5 million Wiis, over 4 million Nintendo 3DS systems and more than 3.4 million units of the Nintendo DS.

“One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” comments Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party lineup in the first part of the year and the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising.”

Reportedly, the total installed base for Wii and Nintendo DS systems reads as 39 million and over 51 million, respectively. Considering the arrival of the new software titles such as Kid Icarus, Pokémon and Mario Party games amongst others, the company intends to keep the momentum going well into Q1 2012.

The Nintendo 3DS which is priced at $169.99 (approx. Rs. 9,016), includes various features such as parental controls, allowing adults to manage the content their young ones access via the devices.
