Intel debuts Extreme Edition processor, software developer resources at GDC 2010

This year’s Game Developers Conference witnessed the launch of Intel’s Graphics Performance Analyzers Suite v3.0 and the unveiling of the Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processor. The company also threw open the Level UP 2001 game demo contest and the next round of the Intel Atom Developer Challenge at this event.

The Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processor codenamed ‘Gulftown’ is claimed to be the first 32nm six-core processor with 12 computing threads. GDC attendees will be given an opportunity to have a go at titles like Sega Napoleon Total War, the forthcoming Ubisoft Ruse, Geomerics Enlighten and Cakewalk Sonar which have been enhanced for the aforementioned platform. Moreover, the company will extend attendees the chance to play StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty by Blizzard Entertainment on PCs housing Intel Core i7 or i5 processors.

Intel GPA v3.0 delivers in-depth application analysis and customization tools which enable game developers to spot performance glitches and optimize gaming titles for desktop PCs and notebooks based on Intel architecture. The newly introduced Intel GPA suite of software tools with support for DirectX 10.1 and 64-bit game executables is available for download through the company’s official website. Games like EA’s Tiger Woods Golf and Atari Star Trek Online that have been improved with Intel GPA and run on Intel HD graphics will be exhibited at the GDC.

The Level Up 2010 game demo contest judges entries on the basis of one out of three categories – ‘Best Game for a Desktop’, ‘Best Game for a Laptop,’ and ‘Best Game for a Netbook.’ Participants are rendered access to software tools and development resources to aid them in their work. Additionally, Intel also proclaimed the next round of the Intel Atom Developer Challenge which has more categories and proffers winners cash prizes, a 2011 Chevy Volt as well as a complete application marketing campaign among others.

The Level Up 2010 and the new Intel Atom Developer Challenge round will be open until June 15 and August 16, 2010, respectively.
