Sony PlayStation 2 completes Seven years, calls for Celebration

Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced a toast to celebrate the seventh birthday of its Sony PlayStation 2 console. It also goes for a double toast as the PS2 console has sold over 120 million units as well as more than a billion pieces of the software, internationally.

The Japanese videogame console maker had released the console on October 26, 2000 and within five years and nine months, the company crossed 100 million mark.

Peter Dille, SCEA’s senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation network, commented, “Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale. PlayStation 2 is a perfect example of our ten year product lifecycle promise and is a testament to the design and technology that continues to be at the core of the product. While today’s anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2′ past, we’re very excited for its future.”

Boasting to be the fastest-selling console, the company said that over 30 million game systems have been sold in the past year and further expect to ship 10 million console by March 2008.

  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (12 million)
  • Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
  • Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
  • Gran Turismo 4 (8.79 million)
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
  • Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million)
  • Final Fantasy X (5 million)
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)
  • Final Fantasy XII (3.68 million)
  • Sony commits a 10-year product life and announces that it has 160 new PS2 titles lined up between now and the end of March 2008 along with over 1,400 games presently available on the platform.
