Beware of PC mouse causing arm pain

A German neurologist has warned of ill health while using computer mice frequently and incorrectly. It can lead to a condition known as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), otherwise known as mouse arm.
Computer Mouse According to Frank Bergmann, Head of the German Association of Nerve Doctors, “Constant clicking with the computer mouse and an unnatural hand position cause damage to the tissues that over the long term can lead to inflammation of the nerve fibres. Tingling, numbness, and weakness in the lower arm and hands are the first signs of overstressing of the tendons and nerves due to monotonous motion.”

The minor symptoms could affect the brain that forms connections between pain and clicking activity. The act of clicking mouse may trigger pain, despite healing of physical damage in the arm.

According to Bergmann, ergonomic working methods can prevent RSI. Instead of using a mouse, many programme functions should be executed by keyboard. It is very important to have the mouse size in-sync with our hands. The double clicks can be carried out by scroll wheel or the middle mouse button. Cold wrist rests could guard against inflammation and padded rests for the ball of the hand can reduce strain on the arm.

Bergmann advices stretching exercises, natural arm and hand movements as well as frequent brief breaks for arm muscles to relax. If there is pulling in the lower arm, or pain when weight is put on, it’s better to visit the neurologist as soon as possible before the injuries gets permanent.
