Samsung, Sony team-up for Shipment of 8th Generation LCD Panels

Sony Samsung and S-LCD logo S-LCD Corporation, a company formed by Samsung Electronics and Sony Corporation, has announced the shipment of its first LCD panels from its 8th Generation Line.

The liquid crystal display panels, measuring 2.2 x 2.5 meters, will be used in 46- and 52-inch full high-definition LCD television sets of Sony and Samsung. The new flat screen TV has the capability to process the world’s largest motherglass substrates, glass sheets used to make screens for flat screen televisions.

“We have remained a step ahead of the competition in terms of production scale and timing. Our sights are now on LCD TVs in the 50-inch class and we aim to lead that segment. Our success with the 7G line will continue with the new 8G line operation, and we will grow into the world’s largest LCD maker,” said Chang Won-kie, CEO of S-LCD.

Ryoji Chubachi, President and Electronics CEO of Sony, Katsumi Ihara, Executive Deputy President, Jong-Yong Yun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, Sang-wan Lee, President of Samsung LCD Business, Won-kie Chang, CEO of S-LCD, and Masatoshi Hitomi, CFO of S-LCD, who attended the shipment launch.

It is said that by the end of this year, the 8G LCD panel line will meet its full monthly output of 50,000 panels. The focus will be on the 50-inch LCD HDTV segment.
