Nokia N900 a.k.a. Rover Internet Table – An N97 Killer to run on Maemo platform?

Nokia N900 Internet Tablet Is this the new Internet Tablet from Nokia that would act as an N97 killer? Slashgear reveals that the Finnish company has apparently unveiled the next-generation Internet Tablet, which could be named as Nokia N900 or Nokia Rover.

With this launch, Nokia seems to have taken a big step to enhance the internet capability by adopting a new platform for the device. It is believed that the Nokia N900 would run on Maemo operating system, which is developed for the Nokia Internet Tablet line of handheld computers. This OS is said to be a modified version of Debian GNU/Linux slimmed down for mobile devices.

Backed by an exclusive report from MobileCrunch, a few specification details of the Rover have been leaked. It is rumored to work on quadband GSM and 3G HSPA. It allegedly supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Other speculated features of the Internet Tablet include a 3.5-inch 800×480 (WVGA) touchscreen, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS with an accelerometer, 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with dual-LED flash, autofocus and sliding cover.

The N900, which might measure 59.7x111x18.2mm and weigh 180g, has 1GB total virtual runtime memory, 32GB internal storage and a support for up to 48GB via external memory. Further, it is even whispered to be powered by a faster TI OMAP processor.

Rumor also suggests that the Nokia N900 Internet Tablet would start shipping by July for Asia, the Middle East and T-Mobile’s worldwide divisions. Apart from that, U.S. might get the tablet with native 3G (T-Mobile) in August or September, followed by the rest of European markets in the month of October.
