Seagate launches Barracuda XT featuring SATA 6Gbit/s technology

Seagate in collaboration with Asus and Gigabyte are now marketing Serial ATA 6Gbit/s complete solutions. The company has started shipping out the Barracuda XT drive that functions at an intense SATA 6Gbit/s. The 3.5” desktop drive, a 7200RPM invention has 2TB of storage space. It is the first of its kind to incorporate a SATA 6Gbit/s interface.
Barracuda XT seems to have upped the mark for desktop speed. The drive has the ability to meet gaming, video-environment and other desktop application demands. In addition to the speed, the storage bandwidth is supposedly twice that of existing PCs. With a four-platter drive and an areal density of 368GB/inch² the product is expected to reach speeds of 6GB/s for any computing application. What’s more? Its 64MB cache enables high data transfer speeds. It is backwards compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s and utilizes the connectors and cables of prior SATA generations for easy incorporation.
“Marvell is pleased to be announcing the industry’s first commercially available SATA 6GB/s solution and working with Seagate to introduce this technology,” said Dr. Alan J. Armstrong, vice president of Marketing, Business Storage Group at Marvell. “Marvell has been working with a broad group of partners and customers to bring this solution to market. As early adopters of Marvell’s SATA 6GB/s technology, both Asus and Gigabyte offer motherboards to complement SATA 6GB/s hard drives.”
“At Asus, we are once again at the forefront of innovation by being the first to launch a native SATA 6GB/s interface on a motherboard,” said Joe Hsieh, corporate vice president & general manager, Motherboard Business Unit & Desktop Business Unit, Asus. “An expansion bridge integrated into the P7P55D Premium helps achieve real SATA 6GB/s throughput to support bandwidth-hungry applications. The Asus solution eliminates transmission bottlenecks in current technology and ensures users truly enjoy faster data speeds and double the storage bandwidth. For other P7P55D Series models, Asus also provides an expansion card to achieve the same results.”
The Barracuda XT drives supported by SATA 6GB/s Asus and Gigabyte motherboards seem to be the hottest offering in high-end PCs today. It is probably the prototype in next generation computing that gamers and multimedia content developers constantly look out for.
The pricing and availability of this drive is not out yet.
