Hitachi rolls out CinemaStar C5K500 High-Capacity HDD

Hitachi announces its latest audio video storage device for digital video applications, dubbed the CinemaStar C5K500.
Developed for digital video recorders (DVRs), set-top boxes and surveillance systems, the latest 2.5-inch hard disk drive is said to be the fourth-generation small form factor CinemaStar drive that has the ability to balance capacity, cool operation and ruggedness.
Hitachi’s 5,400 RPM hard drive offers 22% percent lesser read/write power specification as compared to previous models. It comes in various storage capacities ranging from 160 GB to 500 GB.
To further enhance streaming functionality in continuous “24×7″ digital video applications, the CinemaStar drive incorporates the Hitachi SmoothStream technology. Other than that, the EcoTrac-classified C5K500 features time-limited error recovery, improved thermal monitoring capabilities and silent-seek acoustics for super-quiet operation.
“The explosion of digital music and photos, combined with widespread access to high-definition television content, is driving DVR capacity requirements to new levels,” commented Brendan Collins, vice president, Product Marketing, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. “Home theater systems are becoming increasingly compact, as users seek out space-saving and power-efficient component designs. The new CinemaStar drive will allow DVR manufacturers to deliver compact DVRs with all the capacity and features of larger form factor products.”
The Hitachi CinemaStar C5K500 hard drive will be available by early Q2 2009. The price is yet to be announced.
