Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile External HDD: Review

When the computer needs formatting, the biggest crisis is the loss of important data. In order to avoid the crisis, backup is the only appropriate solution. The amount of CDs, DVDs and USB pen drives that are required will not only fill the drawer but will also take a hell lot of time.

Once my training instructor asked me how and where to take backup of vital data. The only option I could think of was the above mentioned one. She told me that it took her 3 USB pen drives of 2 GB each and 36 CDs to carry forward the backup. My colleague then explained me how silly we were and then informed her about the Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile portable external hard drive. So, here we are reviewing the device.

Looks: Let me start with the most attractive part of the product – its looks. The compact storage device is elegantly housed in a brownish-grey and orange colored extra-rugged shockproof silicone outer case. It easily slides into a tiny-mini bag as it is just 134 x 80.8 x 18.8 mm in dimensions. Without any exaggeration, the device certainly looks sleek and stylish.

Certified: The next interesting thing about the portable HDD is that it meets U.S. military drop-test standards. The dual shock-resistance design not only withstands shock but also protects the internal drive. Wow! The sudden fall at my end did prove that. But please the advice is to not keep trying the fall-technique to check its resistance, though its comes with two-year warranty.

Storage: Now comes the important feature in regards to external HDD – the storage space. The Transcend StoreJet 25 portable hard drive offers an outstanding onboard memory of 250 GB. Yes agreed that it is one-third the size of an entry-level computer’s storage space!

I could store my whole collection of music, videos, photos and lots of important information into it. The device has the capability to hold up to 232 GB of data. While transferring the data of around 211 GB, the drive took around 5 hours; a pretty decent time span. It delivers fast 480 Mbps USB 2.0 data transfer rates.

Hardware: It comes with a blue led light that indicates the ongoing transferring operation, a button to take backup, and two attached USB cable to connect the hard drive to the computer.

What attracted my attention is the 2 USB standard USB cable to provide high-speed connectivity. If one USB cable is not able to deliver enough transfer rate, an enhanced convenience with this complementary port is found

Usage: It is very easy to install. On connecting to the computer, a new Local Disk drive with a newly-assigned drive letter will appear in the My Computer window. Initially, it was a bit confusing as it does not come into view as ‘removable disk’ or ‘Transcend’. It has a simple drag and drop procedure. Besides, the formatting of the drive also does not take much brains and time.

If all this is a bit tricky for you, the manual book and CD is the option to understand the process. The Transcend StoreJet 25 HDD supports all the latest operating systems such as Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS 9.0 or later and Linux Kernel 2.4 or later.

Now comes the best use of the external hard drive – the backup. It was easy to manage backed up files and restore it back again. It offers easy steps to setup the backup task. All I had to do is select the drives or folders or files that need to be backed up, and just specify where it has to be saved. It’s that simple!

Transcend StoreJet Harddrive

I loved the product. It gives me all the freedom that is required for hassle-free storage function. As icing on the cake, the handy drive is little bigger than a phone’s height, which offers portability and mobility. Looks and storage space gets full-score. Speed would rank around 8. I was expecting a higher speed while transferring huge amount of data at one go. As per the speed rate of low-size data transfer, the speed is stupendous.

Overall, I would give a score of 8 on 10 to the Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile external hard drive. The price of the product is around Rs. 9000. Well, it’s a good buy.
