Kingston DataTraveler 100 (DT100) Storage Device is Ideal for Basic Needs of Data Portability: Review

The DataTraveler 100 (DT100) is yet another storage device from Kingston. The Kingston USB drive is available in the capacities of 1, 2, 4 and 8 GB.
Like today’s trend, the drive possesses a very nice and sleek shape. But yet it lacks in elegance. For sure one will not pick the DataTraveler 100 on the basis of its outlook. However, its features might attract you towards it.
The Kingston DT100’s dimension are 59.7mm x 22.3mm x 9.5mm and weighs just 12 grams, that means it can easily fit into your pocket or purse, and is not heavy too.
The most advantageous feature of the DataTraveler 100 is its slide-out styled feature. Hence, the fear of loosing the drive’s cap is totally eradicated. But this advantage will turn into a con if water or dust enters the USB port of the drive. Such incidents may make the drive useless permanently.
The Kingston DT100 features transfer rate of 2.0 HiSpeed and is compatible with popular Operating Systems like Windows Vista / XP / 2000, Mac OS, and Linux. Unfortunately, it does not support the Ready Boot feature.
We actually tested DT100’s speed by trying to transfer heavy multimedia files in the drive. The files of 1.40GB took around eight minutes to transfer. That means light document, spreadsheet and presentation files will take even lesser time to transfer. In short, the drive is time saving too.
Now-a-days, many of the USB drives offer data security features, and the DT100 lags here. Password protection feature has become necessary in today’s era as it disables the drive in case of theft too.
Hence I feel that people having basic needs like carrying the entertainment and less important files can use the DT100. However, transferring and carrying confidential and vital data on this drive would not be advisable.
The 4 GB DT100, which we tested, is available in the Indian market at the price of Rs. 2,272. Looking at the features that the USB drive offers, the Kingston DT100 USB drive doesn’t seem very expensive.
Talking about the overall experience of the DataTraveler 100, it is space and time saving drive, but a little fragile device. One can not handle it carelessly as its USB port is nearly open. However, it’s a great deal to buy Kingston data Traveler 100, for users having basic needs of data portability.
