Toshiba announces New 320GB 2.5-inch HDD that offer Industry’s Largest Storage Capacity

Toshiba logo Electronics manufacturing company Toshiba has revealed that by 2007 end, it plans to ship the very first 2.5-inch hard drives that come with a capacity of 320 GB particularly developed for laptops.

Dubbed MK3252GSX, which achieves an industry-leading capacity of 320GB, and MK2049GSY, which improves performance with a 7,200rpm rotational speed, Toshiba intends shipping first units in Q4 of 2007, perhaps from November onwards.

The 320GB HDD is ideal for rich media aficionados, and incorporated enhanced read-write head and advanced magnetic layer to boost areal density.

Though this the pioneering model in the MKxx52SX series of hard drives Toshiba is developing, the other models will have smaller storage capacity but will be speedier, as compared to MK3252GSX.

For Instance, MK2049GSY reaches 7,200 rpm (the equivalent of a mainstream desktop hard drive) and is also packed with a memory buffer of 16MB. The drive supports high-speed processing of large volumes of data by enhancing the maximum internal data transfer rate by around 46% and increasing the average random access time by some 8%.

Both models support an optional Free Fall Sensor function, which detects falling HDD and parks the head before it crashes.

All HDDs will be connected using a standard, 3Gbit/s SATA interface, and they are all in agreement with EU’s RoHS regulations, released in 2006.

With the new drives product manufacturers will get a broad array supporting many and diverse applications, including high density storage of multiple data sources, such as movies and digital photos, on high-end notebook PCs, and enhanced overall system performance from high-speed data transfers.

The new Toshiba drives will be displayed at the IFA 2007, one of the world’s largest consumer electronics trade fairs, which will be held in Berlin, Germany, from August 31 to September 5.
