Silicon Power LuxMini 920 Review

Silicon Power LuxMini 920

Whether one’s tech enthusiast or not, flash drives seem to have become a common carry-in-bag gadget for almost all PC/notebook/netbook users. After a hands-on experience with a couple of storage products from Silicon Power recently, we can say there is one common factor – style. Now, we are back with yet another Silicon Power innovation in chic attire, the LuxMini 920 USB 2.0 flash drive. As we unfurl its attributes one by one, immerse into our review to know how it fares.

The Silicon Power LuxMini 920 reached us in a secure packet with the device showing off its checkered body through one side of the transparent plastic casing as it relaxed on a small sheet carrying all the information necessary. Well, the bundle stops here, as the packet does not carry anything additional. On ripping the casing apart, we could image our voluminous 16GB data cozily settle within this miniscule solution.

Unlike a chess board, the front and backside of the flash drive was patched with a black-gray checkered-overlapping pattern which carries the Silicon Power logo and letterings. Amost the length of the index finger of some folks at our end, it poses a distinguished look. Holding it vertically, the design tapers at the upper and lower ends. One end serves as the cap which can be pulled out without exerting much force to reveal the connector while the other end has an integrated lanyard slot which further enhances the portability aspect. The edges of the flash drive have been painted in jet black. Though we loved the look, the device didn’t appear sturdy and came across plasticky.

Until now we’ve come across pull-out connectors from Silicon Power, so were disappointed with the inclusion of a cap to protect it as a cap-less design negates the worries of losing the cap. The steel connector has 16GB etched on it. Though there hasn’t been a complete switch-over to USB 3.0, its gaining popularity and high speed elements may take over USB 2.0 soon. Nevertheless, this may take considerable amount of time. Needless to say, the flash drive is pocketable at 11.7 grams and occupies 72.4mm x 17.4mm x 10.0mm space.

The Silicon Power LuxMini 920 adheres to RoHS requirements and can be used with the various operating systems such as Windows Vista, WinXP, Win2000, Mac OS 9.0 or above and Linux / Kernel 2.6.x or above. It also promises a durability of 10,000 insertion/removal cycles. The spec sheet reveals more in the form of operating temperature from 0°C ~ 70°C and storage temperature from -40°C ~ 85°C.

On the performance front, the flash drive promises high-speed read up to 30Mb/sec while write up to 20Mb/sec. We tested it with about 1GB of data on our Asus G53J laptop, it managed to transfer it in 30 seconds at 37Mbps which gradually dips down to 33Mbps. Evidently, its speed surpasses the one mentioned in the spec sheet.
Just like its other drives, Silicon Power lets users take advantage of the SP Widget. The widget comes extremely handy while taking data backup and even with data encryption. It offers a simpler way to organize and manage your data. Users can also download a 60-Day trial version of Norton Antivirus.

Wrapping it up, the Silicon Power LuxMini 920 comes across as yet another clutchable product from Silicon Power’s lab. With a price tag of Rs. 1450 attached, it has gained a rating of 8 on 10 from us.
