Review: Razer Lycosa Keyboard Makes Gaming More Comfortable

Razer Lycosa Keyboard

Catering to all sorts of gaming needs, Razer creeps in with one such product dubbed as the Razer Lycosa keyboard. Today, we give you a hands-on review of it and you can already be sure to expect some great things out of the trendy product. Because the company has proffered some great gaming solutions in the past and is still known for endowing its customers with many more such devices. Among the array we see the company unveiling keyboards, mice, mouse pads, etc to make a gamer’s playing experience more comfortable.

We received the offering snuggly packaged in a neat rectangular cardboard box which sported the picture of the Razer logo, a keyboard with a greenish-blue light emitting from the background. The product name ‘Lycosa’ was seen embossed in a thick silver font with a spider picture taking the place of the alphabet O. As we opened the package, the gaming keyboard was observed to be sitting tight in the case and could easily be taken for granted to be a standard keyboard. This perception was washed out completely as we saw just what this product could do once we plugged it into the CPU.

As the keyboard surged with power from the CPU, we saw the alphabets and numbers glowing with a bright ghostly blue hue. This innovative inclusion allowed us to even find the appropriate keys in the dark. Diverting away from the buttons, we move towards the overall appearance. The keyboard exuberates of a glossy black finish with non-slip rubber Hyperesponse keys that just scream ‘comfort’. There was also a wrist rest located at the bottom of the keyboard which could easily be removed if desired as it was firmly secured in with just screws.

There were four wires sprouting out of the side of the keyboard with two of them designated to the USB ports while the remaining two wires were allotted for the headphone and microphone ports of the CPU. By doing this, we could easily attach our headphones, microphone and USB drive directly into the keyboard, eliminating the need to constantly bend over and fiddle around with the same at the CPU. This is possible as the keyboard includes respective ports which run along the top side. Razer keyboards are known for providing its customers with a comfortable typing as well as gaming experience which could also be clearly seen with the Lycosa offering.

Lycosa Keyboard

The Razer Lycosa Keyboard is apt for playing loads of games incorporating different genres, may it be action, racing, sports or adventure as there is a gaming cluster sporting anti-ghosting capabilities observed on the product. On the extreme right hand side of the keyboard was a TouchPanel from which we could access various media options. Besides appealing to the gaming audiences, Lycosa even caters to music lovers as the touch sensitive panel is littered with media playback keys. Through this, we could control different media programs like Winamp, iTunes, Windows Media Player and Real Player as well as special dedicated touch buttons for play/pause, stop, previous and forward track. The three lighting options offered by the company could easily be adjusted from the touch panel itself. The first two options are used to light up the alphabets or completely dampen it. When the third option was opted for, we could just see the integral WASD buttons emit a blue light.

We could make all the necessary adjustments according to our preferences via the Razer Lycosa configurator. The macros allow just about any function to be assigned to a particular key with each having the capability to be programmed with 16 keystroke events. We could fashion up to 10 different profiles for various games complete with our personal preferences. The company allows a certain profile to automatically activate when a particular game is played. Once players are done, the settings are programmed to the allotted profile. A Razer logo was also seen splashed amidst the other media options on the touch panel. Through the logo and the F1 to F10 buttons, we could easily toggle between our assigned profiles. The settings for each game need not be configured every time.

The Lycosa was put to test with Counter Strike. We experienced an easy and fun way to go about shooting Terrorists or gunning down Counter Terrorists. The movements were done with ease through the gaming-friendly WASD keyboard buttons. Evading oncoming attacks and moving around stealthily was a piece of cake thanks to the inclusion of the anti-ghosting abilities of the keyboard. There is just a 1ms response time which makes it an apt device through which games like sports and racing can be fun to indulge in.

To conclude, it will surely blend in perfectly with the gamer’s other peripherals on the computer table. With the wrist rest detached from the keyboard, the Lycosa takes up nearly the same amount of space as compared to a standard keyboard. The keyboard also allows gamers to play in the dark as it features blue lit-up buttons. The Razer Lycosa Keyboard bears a price of $79.99 (approx. Rs.3,645) and comes complete with Quick Start guide, Catalog, logo stickers and much more. We endow the Razer product with a 9 out of 10 rating.
