Wireless Power Consortium gets Qi low power standard approved

Qi Power

This next technology could emerge as one of the most convenient ways of powering up electronic devices. The Qi low power standard introduced by the Wireless Power Consortium has finally received approval. The standard is capable of offering no more than 5W of energy to wireless power receivers.

The first document on the Q1 specifications talks about the gadget’s interface and explains its ability to transfer power between a power transmitter and a power receiver. This transfer is enabled by field magnetic induction between coils and does not involve direct contact between the charger and device receiving power.

The second section of the document details out performance needs of the power transmitters and receivers, while the third fraction sketches out the compliance test methodology demanded by power receivers and transmitters.

There’s no word on when we’re likely to see such a convenient device charging interface come to reality as yet.
