Ambarella’s iOne System-on-Chip brings advanced HD camera to Android platform
Ambarella previously unveiled various image processing semiconductors into the tech terrain. Now the company brings forth the iOne System-on-Chip (SoC) which endows the Android platform with superior HD camera and multimedia capabilities. With this inclusion, a new class of smart camera devices is expected to emerge that are capable of still photography, Internet-connectivity, advanced HD video recording and running powerful applications.

The multi-stream encoding capability of the product is able to support live video streaming, full HD telepresence applications and Wi-Fi upload of video clips to websites like YouTube. The multi-format video decoding provides playback of Internet as well as broadcast based video content up to 1080p60 resolution. As claimed, it builds upon five generations of Ambarella DSP algorithms and architectures.
“Coupling our proven video and imaging processing expertise with the Android platform enables next generation cameras to take a significant leap forward in user experiences and capabilities,” said Fermi Wang, Ambarella CEO. “The iOne will fundamentally change the way consumers capture, create and share visual content. We are very excited about the possibilities.”
Based on a triple ARM CPU architecture fashioned for low-power mobile media applications, the iOne System-on-Chip also boasts of housing dual-core 1-GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPUs for complying demanding Android applications. The integration of a third 533-MHz ARM-11 can support real-time camera tasks while enabling the camera to boot within a second. Drenched with a unique architecture, it features a single x32 DRAM for reduced total system cost and power operation. The powerful 3D graphics engine renders OpenGL ES 2.0 and HD GUI requirements. The offering further provides smooth connectivity support for Bluetooth, Mobile TV, FM, GPS and WiFi (802.11n).
Sampling of the iOne System-on-Chip from Ambarella is currently being sent to early access customers.
