Freescale devises MC1323x family for ZigBee RF4CE products

With a rise in demand for integrated home entertainment systems, radio frequency based devices have been molded to offer efficient and cost-effective performance. Keeping with this latest trend, Freescale has crafted the MC1323x system-on-chip device family to please ZigBee RF4CE consumer electronics.
This new solution is said to perform optimally by employing its premier processing capabilities with proficient power consumption. Featuring an 8-bit HCS08 microcontroller, the offering has been wrapped with flash memory, RAM and a transceiver which qualifies to meet the IEEE 802.15.4 norms. Embedded with high-performance peripherals, the entire range can be used for infrared functions and devices along with RF control and monitoring.
“We worked directly with our customer manufacturers to develop the MC1323x as a solution that provides high-performance functionality and industry leading integration at a cost-effective price point. We’ve seen high demand for our IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee device families as wireless applications continue their rapid growth in areas such as home entertainment control, healthcare and medical monitoring, and residential applications,” explained Reza Kazerounian, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Freescale’s Microcontroller Solutions Group.
According to the company, this family comprises three devices which are expected to enclose capacities of up to 128K flash and 8K RAM memory along with a USB 2.0 at the outset. The pack has been attuned to suit general market applications including remote controls, TVs, set top boxes, portable blood pressure monitors and others.
“With the insurgence of wall mounted televisions and the consumer trend of clean living room design by hiding the clutter of cables from set top boxes, Blu-ray players and audio receivers, ZigBee RF4CE is gaining market share in the consumer electronics industry,” remarked Bas Driesen, RF4CE Steering Committee Chairman. “Freescale has been instrumental in creating and driving RF4CE adoption and the development of the MC1323x family further strengthens the RF4CE marketplace.”
The ZigBee RF4CE technology enables radio-frequency communications at enhanced pace with reliability and interference avoidance. It also makes the device’s operation more flexible from longer distances and eliminates the line-of-sight and field-of-vision barriers in infrared applications. These specifications serve a variety of consumer electronic products.
It has been stated that the MC13233C is now available for customer sampling. The company will proffer free software, development kits and reference designs which will allow developers to test the family on different hardware platform.
