Sharp VR-100BR1 Blu-ray discs support BDXL format specification

Sharp Logo Dual layer Blu-ray discs currently offer users around 50GB of storage capacity. Now Sharp has unveiled the VR-100BR1 triple-layer Blu-ray write-once disc that follows the BDXL format specification and integrates up to 100GB storage capacity.

The disc comes with an inner diameter of 24mm and 118mm outer diameter for disc labeling. The conventional dual layer structure is replaced by a triple layer structure. This lets users record up to about 8.6 hours of BS digital TV broadcasts in DR mode or approximately 12 hours of terrestrial digital TV content.

The disc can be used for storing a host of HDTV content like movies or TV episodes. Any other long-duration video can be stored to just one of these discs without affecting the HD quality of the original content. The discs also allow users to hand-write labels on them with oil-based or water-based marker pens. The hard coat process shields the discs as also stored content from read and write errors caused by scratches or dirt.

Sharp’s VR-100BR1 Blu-ray discs are expected to be released across Japan starting from July 30 this year. However, pricing details of the disc are still unclear.
