Sharp to release new LCD Controller for mobile devices

Mobile device segment has been diversified to include mobile phones, smartphones, tablet PCs and eBook readers. Concurrently, there has been a crescive growth in demand for dual-screen display capability in these devices. Sharp has recently developed and plans to introduce a new LCD controller for portable devices which enable concurrent display on two different screens, the LR388G9.
The innovation is a chip which features 32Mbits of built-in video memory and is combined with faster image processing speeds to offer dual display capability. This technology enables two diverse contents to be displayed at the same time on two separate LCD screens at a resolution of half-XGA (480 x 1024 pixels).
The LCD controller supports output of full-HD video to an externally connected LCD TV or projectors or other equipments. Featuring a high-speed serial interface (MDDI 1.2/MIPI), the device equips further range of other interfaces for cameras, SD memory cards, and IrSimple. It touts to make mobile devices smaller and reduce new-product development time.
Other major highlights are RGB, SVDI, MIPI LCD panel interfaces, 24-bit output colors, MIPI, CMOS I/F (14,000k pixels max.) camera interfaces, and WFBGA261-0808 (8 mm x 8 mm) packaging.
The LR388G9 LCD controller is priced at 2,400 yen (approx Rs. 1,295) including tax and its sample will be available beginning July 5. The controller’s mass production is anticipated to begin by September 2010.
