BD-5300S Rewritable Drive

Entertainment buffs tarrying the need for easy to use and affordable optical devices have just got something to feast their eyes on. Sony Optiarc America has just rolled out its next-generation half-height internal Blu-ray Disc rewritable drives. Touted to be an ideal replacement burner for a standard DVD drive, these drives are equipped with Blu-ray Disc technology. Blu-ray high-definition playback is included with the peripherals.

Writing single BD-R media at up to 12x and dual layer BD-R media at up to 8x speeds, the solutions flaunt the capability to record a full 25GB disc in about ten minutes. Using 6x compatible BD-R media, the drives can achieve 12x recording speeds. The Sony BWU-500S model comes integrated with CyberLink’s Media Suite 8 which helps capturing, authoring, editing and taking back up. Users can view high-definition personal content and play Blu-ray Disc movies, including 3D Blu-ray movies as well. One 25GB Sony BD-R blank disc comes packed in with this device.

With the standard 5.25-inch form factor, these devices feature a SATA interface and monitor consistent recording plus adjust read-speed technology for smooth playback. The new Sony drives boast of the ability to record up to 50GB of data for random access storage and backup on BD-R or BD-RE discs. More options subsume up to 220 minutes of high-definition 24Mbps MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video on a BD-R/RE 50GB disc. Recording of standard 4.7GB DVD+/-R discs at up to 16x speeds, 8.5GB DVD+/-R double/dual layer at up to 8x, DVD+RW at up to 8x, DVD-RW at up to 6X, CD-R at up to 48x, CD-RW at up to 24x, and support for DVD-RAM recording at up to 12x speeds are also bundled in.

Available in a retail and OEM configuration, the BWU-500S and BD-5300S drives are anticipated to be up for grabs this month through authorized distributors, resellers and select online sites.
