KDDI unveils microSD cards with Wi-Fi

KDDI microSD cardsIn the past, Eye-Fi card made an impression with its ability to offer Wi-Fi connectivity. Now KDDI Corp is making waves with the recent introduction of two microSD cards with Wi-Fi connectivity, reports Slashgear. The two memory cards when equipped in a mobile phone facilitate a rapid internet connection.

The company showcased two types of cards, which are manufactured by Mitsumi Electric Co Ltd and Renesas Technology Corp, respectively. Both the cards are mounted with a wireless LAN IC compliant with IEEE802.11b/g, a transceiving antenna, passive components and so on.

With integrated RF transceiver and baseband processing, the Mitsumi Electric card banks on Atheros Communications Inc’s AR6002 chipset. Renesas Technology on the other hand utilizes it’s ‘KS3021’ RF transceiver IC and ‘KS7010’ baseband processing IC. According to the company for both types of cards, the area of antenna is about one third of overall size of the card.

The availability and price of the microSD cards are not yet known.
