Multi-tap and QWERTY keypads have been adorning the exteriors of mobile phones for a long time. Now Lava has introduced India to the B2 and B5 handsets with the Alpha keypad which boasts of an entirely different layout as compared to the aforementioned keyboards. All 26 alphabets of the English language are placed in the ABCD order on the keypad.

The company aims to make it simpler for users to send messages or e-mails, especially those who are not accustomed to QWERTY or multi-tap keyboard options. Most of the existing and upcoming phones are cited to accommodate a QWERTY keypad. Apart from offering faster typing speed, this new keypad alternative is designed to offer users the ability to type using just one hand.

“Lava always endeavored to introduce consumer insight driven innovations, which make people’s life simple. Last year Lava redefined consumer expectation with the introduction of KKT and A series phones,” explained SN Rai, Co-founder and Director, Lava. “It took months of rigorous research and consumer trials to conceptualize Alpha Key-pad. We feel Alpha key-pad would further redefine the mobile phone market in a big way.”

“Alpha key pad is one of the fine examples of Lava’s innovation in the Indian mobile handset industry. Very soon we are coming up with few more innovations which would herald a new era in this industry. We remain committed to being the first in deploying innovation & technology in the mobile handsets for consumers in India. With the launch of the new B series phones with Alpha key-pad, we seek to provide consumers with a completely different and comfortable mobile experience that has never been experienced by consumers anywhere,” added Rai.

A market study conducted in key Indian cities has suggested that a larger number of consumers wish for a business-class handset. At the same time, they may not feel comfortable while using such a device due to the QWERTY keypad layout that most phones of this ilk come with. Touted be the first company to launch the Alpha keyboard, Lava has revealed plans to extend its line of mobile phones as well.

Pricing details of Lava’s B2 and B5 handsets equipped with the Alpha keypad are unclear at present.
