Samsung Star Handset

Samsung has all the reasons to celebrate as its Star touchscreen handset that was launched in May has now crossed the mark of 5 million sales. This model has also been the first handset to achieve this milestone in a span of mere four months, reveals the company.

The Star S5230 was first launched in Europe and in about one and a half month, it has achieved sales figures that reached a whooping one million. Post this the company expanded sales efforts to include markets in CIS, Southeast and Southwest Asia, East-Central Africa, China, and Central America.

This handset then set the markets on fire as it traded more than 700,000 units in May and over 900,000 in June. The monthly sales for this model in July were 1.6 million where as August bagged a good 1.8 million worth of sales. After observing the current trend, the company expects Star S5230’s sales to reach 10 million on a global level by the end of November this year.

“We’re very pleased by this success,” said Young-hee Lee, Vice President of Marketing, Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “We see the demand for touch screen phones increasing and we will continue to offer consumers a diverse range of products, supported by unique marketing campaigns.”

The spiked rise in sales has been seen particularly in the European markets where Samsung has sold more than 2.8 million units, topping sales lists in key markets such as France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Italy.

This handset was targeted at the youth with its affordable price range, the slim 11.9 mm body and a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen. This device has also been backed with high-tech features that include Samsung’s exclusive high-quality sound technology, DNSe, as well as a SmileShot-enabled camera and Bluetooth v2.1.

Thus, its success can be attributed to its affordable price along with its sleek design and an interactive user interface. Samsung has further launched active marketing programs in emerging markets where the handset is currently on sale. To tailor the activities, Samsung also holds experimental Mobile Live events and outdoor marketing to take note of specific trends in those countries.
