iPhone and iPod Touch new requirement for Missouri Journalism students

Surprisingly, the students of the Missouri University School of Journalism have a new entry under their ‘requirements’ list. According to Engadget, MacWorld reports that the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch has now been listed as mandatory for these journalism students. Although the university has made it clear that no fine will be imposed and that it is not compulsory for students to purchase the device.
Reportedly, this move by the university was basically initiated to help their students to include the cost of their hi-tech gadgets in the federally subsidized loans. These loans are payable after graduation.
The university claims that these products will be useful to the students in recording and reviewing lectures. Even after considering the bonafide intentions of the university, the fact that still remain unclear like why are only Apple’s products on the list. Why are other products that serve the same purpose and still cost only a fraction excluded? Many such questions remained unanswered.
This has also lead to the initiation of a group protest on Facebook. Though the university says its not mandatory to purchase the devices, the clarification again brings us back to where we started- why has the device actually been listed on the ‘required’ list of the college.
