LG and Samsung Phones to get AT&T’s MediaFlo Mobile TV Service

AT&T, MediaFlo logos AT&T has announced that it will release the MediaFlo mobile television service that is powered by Qualcomm. The service will be available on LG’s vu and Samsung’s Access. The handsets will broadcast channels such as Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, FOX Mobile , MTV, NBC 2GO, NBC News2Go and Nickelodeon along with two exclusive channels. However, the leading network operator declines to name them.

Let’s look at the working process of the MediaFlo technology on the mobile phones. MediaFlo broadcasts live video and audio streams over the air that is later captured by mobile phones with the help of the specially created Qualcomm chipsets.

This innovative technology makes use of spectrum that Qualcomm owns to beam broadcast, eliminating the use of carrier’s wireless spectrum, making it less taxing on the network.

It is believed that the broadcast model is more economical as compared to streaming long video clips on demand.

Qualcomm’s MediaFlo technology for mobile TV service is expected to be available in May 2008 via AT&T.
