BlackBerry Services Not Banned in India, says Government

BlackBerry Recently, the Indian Government was against the BlackBerry plan and was in the works to ban the service in the country due to security concerns. However, the government has now denied the ban.

RIM, the owner of BlackBerry technology and Tata Teleservices were in talks to deliver the BlackBerry’s push-mail service to Tata handsets in India. However, the security aspects stopped the home affair ministry to grant permission. The main reason behind the case is that emails made from BlackBerry can neither be traced nor be recorded.

It is believed that Communications minister A Raja ruled out banning BlackBerry services, but top officials in the department of telecommunications (DoT) stated that the government will now scrutinize all push-mail services.

Indian telelcom companies such as Reliance Communications, BPL Mobile and Vodafone-Essar do offer push-mail services through Symbian and Microsoft operating systems.

DoT mentioned that because of the home ministry’s objection on the issue, all operators have been ordered to stop BlackBerry services by the end of December. But, operators were given a three-month extension, allowing then to end the service by March. Around 400,000 users in India have subscribed to the BlackBerry service.
