BlackBerry Maker files Patent for Angular Keyboard for Mobile Devices

Research In Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of BlackBerry, could be planning to incorporate angular keyboard for its handheld mobile communication device, according to a recent patent application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

RIM phone Angular Keyboard

Unfortunately, there is no mention whether this angular keyboard is proposed for future blackberry smartphones or just any other device from RIM. Through the picture, it is just an assumption that this mobile device could be a blackberry handset.

This angular keyboard is been developed to offer convenience for the human thumb move. It will probably make SMSing easier. The keys would be placed at a 45-degree angle to the base of the device.

Here’s the description of the concept that RIM mentioned in its document:

  • Wireless handheld mobile communication device including a housing with a display above a keyboard exposed for user actuation. A length of the device is greater than the width. Each key of a right-hand keyfield has a longitudinal axis oriented at a left-to-right inclined angle while each key of a left-hand keyfield has a longitudinal axis oriented at a right-to-left inclined angle from the vertical centerline. A left boundary of the keyboard is located adjacent the left lateral side edge of the device and the right boundary of the keyboard is located adjacent the right lateral side edge of the device so that the keyboard spans a substantial entirety of the width of the device
  • The keyboard will probably lessen the strain on the hands and thumbs for extended typing sessions as well as integrate more easily struck keys, instead of the conventionally right-angled keyboards on larger mobile devices.
