BSNL Asks Permission from Indian Government to Start CDMA Mobile Service
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), an government run Telecom service provider in India, has asked the government’s permission to start mobile phone services using CDMA technology in the country.
However, this step from BSNL has been challenged by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), informed A. Raja, IT and Communications Minister.
“BSNL has submitted a request to the government recently, seeking permission to provide fully-mobile services using CDMA technology in addition to the GSM technology under the existing licenses in 21 states,” said A. Raja.
COAI is a union of companies offering services based on global standard on mobile (GSM) telecom. It challenged BSNL at the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal.
COAI advices to use a set of recommendations while providing dual technology i.e. GSM and CDMA.
Currently only Tata Indicom and Reliance Communications offer CDMA-based mobile services in India.
