Use of Mobile Phones Near Hospitals is Hazardous: says Study

Mobile Phones Disturb Hospital Equipments Recently we had reported about the risk of cancer due to excessive use of mobile phones. Now the latest study says that mobile devices are not only harmful to human beings but can also cause defect in hospital equipments.

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam have found out that apart from disturbing patients, mobile phones can damage various other important equipments. They say that these mobiles can switch off ventilators or disrupt pacemakers.

Dutch researchers studied nearly 50 incidents of electromagnetic interference from mobile phone use in hospitals. Out of them 75percent were recorded as hazardous.

Researchers who published their study in BioMed Central’s online open access journal Critical Care wrote, “Critical care equipment is vulnerable to electromagnetic interference by new-generation wireless telecommunication technologies with median distances of about 3 centimeters.”

Moreover, the researchers at Amsterdam University also sound that General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) signal is the most dangerous for the hospital’s assets and equipments.

As a remedy, researchers suggest to keep mobile phones at least one meter away from hospital beds and equipments.
