Nokia’s BL-5C Battery Explodes in India

Nokia battery on fire After Nokia recalled its faulty BL-5C battery Telegraph reported about a battery explosion in West Bengal, India.

Kishori Saha, 25 year old Kolkata resident had plugged in her Nokia 2100 handset for charging on Aug 29. The mobile blew in about 15 minutes. Yes, her mobile’s battery belonged to the same series which has been recalled by Nokia.

Five months pregnant Kishori was not hurt but was in such a state of shock that she had to be taken to the hospital. However she was discharged without being administered medicine.

Talking to telegraph N.G. Renganathan from the Central Electrochemical Research Institute in Tamil Nadu said, “When the charging schedule is not adhered to and overcharging happens, a protection mechanism is expected to work and safeguard the battery. But if the protection mechanism fails, an explosion can occur.”

Last month Nokia had recalled BL-5C batteries that were manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co., Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006.

Nokia users can check Nokia’s website to know of their battery belong to the defected series. Also Nokia users can SMS battery’s 26 digit number printed at back of the BL-5C battery. Besides, Nokia also has set up a helpline.

The 26 digit printed at the of the BL-5C battery can help users to find out if their battery is faulty. Users can check their batteries in the following simple ways:

  • Log on to nokia.co.in and enter the 26 character battery identification number
  • SMS BT <26 character battery identification number> and send to 5555
  • Call 08030303838 from BSNL landlines and 30303838 for other phones and state the 26 character battery identification number

      Problem with 90% of the cases are that FAKE batteries are used in the first place. Those who buy their phone sin the grey market buy phones where the real battery has already been substituted with a fake.

      Nokia cant be blamed for 90% of the cases. For the rest, they have done a great job in making people aware and undertaking the recall.

      my nokia BL-5C battery get early discharge. i have to charge offenly in a day. so want very long duration for charging. what can i do?
