Apple to Use Solar Power for Mobile Devices

Last year in October, Greenpeace had warned Apple on using hazardous chemicals for its mobile phones. At that time, Apple assured them that it would put a total stop on the use of these chemicals by the end of 2008. Apple has apparently stuck to its promise and has considered utilizing a method to take advantage of solar power.

Solar Power patent Apple has reportedly filed a patent application for its mobile devices that would make use of solar power for charging. It will not be restricted to only the iPhone, but would work for handheld devices and portable computers too. With this incorporation, the devices would be able to extend the battery life significantly. However, using a solar panel into these portable compact devices is a huge task.

But, Apple has made it a point to successfully integrate the eco-friendly process of charging. The company has incorporated the solar panels behind the actual LCD screen of a portable device so that it would absorb the ambient light that passes through the LCD screen and reaches the panel.

As it is still in a working stage, it is quite difficult to comment on how efficiently Apple’s products would be able to capture the solar energy via photovoltaic cells. Let’s hope that it successfully implements it and devices such as iPhone, iPod and laptops work towards the betterment of the environment. And of course the separate charger will no longer provide inconvenience to the user.
