Vodacom recently unveiled the Vodafone Webbook in South Africa. The device is loaded with Ubuntu, a Linux-based operating system, with a user-friendly, open source computer programme.

This Webbook by Vodafone is crafted in way that makes it portable, suggested aptly by its weight of less than a kg. It is crafted with a 10-inch LCD screen, 512MB of memory and an additional 4GB of storage space. The device comes with a 24 months warranty and free software updates.

“Ubuntu’s founding principle is to remove the barriers of access to computing for everyone,” explained Mark Shuttleworth, pioneer of Ubuntu. “Products like this give hope of connectivity to the three billion people of our planet who are unconnected today. It’s a step, we hope one of many more, that puts people on a level playing field in terms of the tools they use and the worlds they can explore.”

The company says that most of the population in South Africa depends on mobile devices for internet connectivity. In this scenario, the Vodafone Webbook will suit the needs of most people as it is devised to provide on-the-go portable web access. Along with this, the Ubuntu operating system offers users with a number of software applications.
