Mass Production of OLPC XO Laptops Announced for School Children

Mass Production of OLPC laptops After the first order from Uruguay, the One Laptop Per Child Foundation has announced that they have started the mass production of the OLPC laptop to spread the sub-$200 computers to schoolchildren in developing countries.

The Chinese factory run by manufacturer Quanta Computer Inc., is expected to develop around 15,000 XO laptops per month. These devices run on free Linux software and are designed to be a learning tool. It also comes with a child-friendly user interface, education-oriented tools, including a Web browser, a rich media player and an e-book reader as well as with features that are specifically created for children in the emerging world.

According to Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the nonprofit group (OLPC), “Today represents an important milestone in the evolution of the One Laptop Per Child project. Against all the naysayers and thanks to great partners such as Quanta, we have developed and now manufactured the world’s most advanced and greenest laptop and one designed specifically to instill a passion for learning in children.”

The laptops will be available in Uruguay, Peru and Mongalia. However from Monday onwards, North America will have a special scheme where two laptops will be offered for $399, one will be for the buyer and the other will be donated to a child overseas through the site.

It is said that Negroponte has traveled around the world to meet global leaders and make public appearances in an effort to propel the effort forward and garner support for the endeavor.
