Mitsubishi Laser HDTV Unveiled at CES

Mitsubishi logo Mitsubishi has launched its most-awaited technology, the laser HDTV. The company took more than two years to develop the laser TV based on a rear projection technology.

The world’s first laser HDTV uses much less power, does away with the lamps with lasers and displays twice the color gamut of any other current television technology. Mitsubishi’s Max Wasinger maintained, “Nothing can reproduce the color intensity of the laser.”

The company showcased the 65-inch, 1080p widescreen HDTV model that was about 10-inchs deep, which is slated to be part of a line of laser TVs released to retail sometime in 2008.

However, Mitsubishi declined to comment on how many products would be in the line beyond stating “more than one.” They are concentrating only on the specialty retailer market with products in the 60-inch and above range, at the moment.

Additionally, Mitsubishi also presented its 3D demo on the unit with its REALD technology. It needs to be encoded and later run from Blu-ray players to a special 3D set-up-box. Special glasses are also required to view the content.

Details on the Mitsubishi Laser HDTV’s specifications, price were not released.
