Garmin recalls certain nuvi personal navigation devices

Garmin Logo The last navigation device unleashed by Garmin was the nuvi 3700 series. Now, the company has announced that it is recalling about 1.25 million nuvi personal navigation devices which contain batteries manufactured by a third-party supplier within a defined date code range and that have a specific printed circuit board design.

Potential overheating issues have been determined by Garmin when the identified third-party batteries are used in certain devices with the PCB design. There is a possibility that when these factors are combined, it triggers overheating which may lead to a fire hazard. This particular issue has only been recognized in less than ten cases involving certain nuvi models.

The company requests its users to check online if their nuvi device is one of the models which are being called back. The 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number) model numbers are reportedly affected. Out of the 1.25 million devices, 7,96,000 units were sold in the U.S.

Users can visit Garmin’s official website and enter their nuvi device’s serial number to determine about the defect. The company commits to replace the battery and insert a spacer on top of the battery next to the PCB of each customer’s nuvi device for free.
