Garmin puts out Astro GPS dog tracking collar
Pet owners who tend to keep a loose hold over their canines’ leashes have good reason to keep doing so. Garmin has revealed the DC 40 tracking collar based on the Astro GPS dog tracking system. The DC 40 collar and the Astro 220 receiver are waterproof.
The device is fitted onto an inch long orange polyurethane coated collar strap with a small GPS puck integrated into the unit’s main housing instead of on the collar. This enables owners to use the DC 40 with almost all standard e-collar receivers. The unit can be charged with the charger fixed around the housing and the LED charging light indicates if it is being charged or is fully charged.
“The refinements that are found in the new DC 40 are the result of feedback from hunters and trainers,” cited Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “The new collar is more convenient and more durable than ever. Whether purchasing an Astro for the first time or upgrading from an older model, sporting dog owners will love the refinements that are packed into the new DC 40.”
This gizmo allows users to enter a four digit PIN number that prevents their dogs’ whereabouts from leaking out. The Astro 220 receiver points to exactly that location where the dog is present within a range of about 7 miles depending on the environs. This user-friendly device requires only a GPS signal to locate the position of the pet.
It can track up to 10 dogs per receiver and flashes location updates every 5, 10, 30 or 120 user selectable seconds. The Astro 220 receiver runs on two AA batteries that last for about 24 hours while the battery life of the DC 40 collar lasts between 17 hours to 48 hours. The map page provided by Astro displays the location of the dog in relation to the searcher.
The company’s Covey Counter is cited to let hunters mark the exact location, time of day and elevation where they encountered their quarry and mark the number of birds flushed or how many were taken. Additionally, the Astro is equipped with a microSD card slot to insert 24K maps that give hunters an idea of the appropriate areas to hunt
The device offers optional pre-programmed topo maps or road maps with basic functions as am automotive GPS unit for navigational purposes in unknown locations. The optional road map data also displays information about directions to motels, gas stations, restaurants and even veterinarians.
Users wanting to upgrade from a previous generation of collar can purchase the DC 40 separately. The DC 40 collar which is shipped as part of the Astro GPS dog tracking system is available through Garmin’s online portal.
