No PCs and Gaming for Freshmen in Chinese Universities
Three popular Chinese Universities, namely the Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University, have made it a point that freshmen should not bring computers with them to the university.
According to the universities’ officials, this rule will keep the freshmen from getting addicted to online gaming. The Education Administration Office at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology spokesman said that these freshmen find themselves unable to control their gaming passion and cannot adjust to university life.
It’s been five years now that the policy is implemented, regardless of whether the students are majoring in computer related studies or not. However, sophomores are only allowed to bring a computer after passing an English test.
A small poll comprising of 15 university students revealed that almost all of them brought computers in their second year. It also showed that the students immediately began to play computer games all day. Furthermore, 12 students admitted to having failed exams because of their gaming habits, and nine said that they brought the computers only to play games.
Now, let’s see whether this banning policy enhances the educational life of the freshman or not.
