Hands-On Review: Sony Ericsson W595 Slider Phone

Following the bandwagon of innovative phones with latest technologies, it’s quite evident that users appreciate phones with multiple advanced functionalities. The newest phone that joins the Sony Ericsson music phone brigade, the W595 slider, is among a few entrants to bring in an ultimate multimedia experience.

Well, we would like to call it a W580i look-alike apart from a few upgradations. Amidst the several color-combo choices, we got the one imbued in active blue with turquoise. We’d really like to know when Sony Ericsson plans to go sleeker. The looks of the phone weren’t much appealing, but as they say never judge a book by its cover, we were interested in what it holds within.

As a famous quote says our life is frittered away by detail… simplify, simplify. Yes, this phone is quite simple to use and smoothly slides open to reveal the keypad with zigzag patterned keys. The front side of the W595 slider features a 2.2-inch 240×320 pixel LCD display with a navigation wheel and few short cut buttons, quite congested we must say. The right edge comprises of a two-way volume button and a shortcut button to the Walkman music functions, the left edge comes with an adapter jack while the top and bottom edges come equipped with speakers.

The UI is quite good, we loved it but were disappointed to see the 3.2 MP camera without the flash. Well, the Comek Strek application will make up for it as it lets you get real creative with the images and adds loads of fun for taking pictures.

Let’s move towards what the phone is meant for. Yes, we are talking about music. The most interesting bit is the stereo speakers with share jack, so next time you and your sibling or pal can listen to the same song simultaneously not by sharing the earphones but by sharing the jack. Yes, two separate earphones can be connected to this phone simultaneously. But what goes amiss is the 3.5mm headphone socket. If you are all about musical instruments then do check out the Music Mate 5 function.

The Internet browser is quite impressive, though we did juggle with the settings and made a few calls to the ISP. It wowed us with quick access to huge pages and took less time comparatively. The added advantage is the pan view function and accelerometer that allows portrait/landscape view.

All those who love playing games will definitely enjoy the pre-loaded games such as Extreme Air, Guitar Rock from Gameloft, Quadra Pop and Racing fever. You can also download games of your choice as the phone supports 3D and Java games.

Though not chic, the Sony Ericsson W595 slider is quite a decent looking phone with some quality features. We would like to rate it 7.5 on 10. The phone is available in India for Rs.15,495.
