Technology enthusiasts who love watching their most liked multimedia content on the widescreen can now target their eyes on this new offering. STMicroelectronics has collaborated with bTendo to carve out the compact Pico Projector for various smartphones and portable consumer electronics devices.

This unit is based on bTendo’s Scanning Laser Projection engine technology along with ST’s MEMS expertise, video processing proficiency and semiconductor process technology. This newest embedded projector is touted to be less than 2.5cm cube in volume and below 6mm in height.

“We are very excited to collaborate with STMicroelectronics, the world leader in MEMS technologies for mobile handsets, to bring to the market our cutting-edge technology for embedded Pico Projectors,” commented Dana Gross, CEO of bTendo. “ST’s best-in-class semiconductor process technology and design capabilities will enable a cost-effective, low-power solution perfect for personal consumer devices.”

The newly unleashed offering ensures quick and flawless integration by merging two MEMS-based micro-mirror-actuation devices inside the system’s optical engine, an improved video-processing chip and built-in support for MIPI. Further, this new solution will enable owners to share their media content with utmost ease.

A demo of this technology was displayed at Mobile World Congress 2011.
