Sony delays the OLED TV launch

Sony XEL-1 OLED TV Sony had introduced the XEL-1 in the US at the beginning of this year. But it looks like this OLED TV has proved itself incapable of winning American hearts. The main hurdle in the success of this slim TV is the $2000+ price tag.

According to SonyInsider, WSJ reports the launch of the 20-27 inch models of the XEL-1 have now been delayed. These models were due for launch at the end of this year. Well, the move makes sense as it will give Sony time to work on the device and tackle the sole hurdle in its success.

Reportedly, the production yield for the 11-inch XEL-1 is less than 60 percent and larger panels are likely to increase the difficulties. This explains the reasons for the delay of the larger models. WSJ also speculates that Sony may give Samsung and LG the time to catch up and launch a low priced competitor of the XEL-1. At present the XEL-1 is the only OLED TV available in the market.

Although the launch of these TVs has been delayed, they are believed to hit the market around next year. The pricing details for the new OLED TVs are still under wraps but they are expected to be luxurious priced. However, Sony has refrained from commenting on this topic.
